The attack took place around the Eiffel Tower. One traveler was reported dead.
Reported CNN, quoted on Sunday (3/12/2023), one person was killed and two others were injured in a knife and hammer attack in Paris near the Eiffel Tower. The French interior minister revealed this.
“French police have arrested a man suspected of killing one person and wounding two others in the center of Paris,” French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told reporters at the scene on Saturday evening.
“The attack took place in Bir Hakeim, near the Eiffel Tower. The attacker used a knife and a hammer,” he said.
One person, a German tourist born in the Philippines, was killed in the attack. Two other people suffered injuries which were not life-threatening, the minister added.
One of the police officers who responded to the scene used an electric shock device to neutralize the attacker, Darmanin said. The suspect’s life was not in danger, he said.
“After the arrest, he said that he could no longer bear to see Muslims dying in Afghanistan and Palestine,” Darmanin said.
Speaking to journalists, Darmanin added that the suspect was a French citizen who was born in France in 1997.
He was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 for planning violent acts.
“The suspect is known to intelligence agencies as having a serious mental disorder,” said Darmanin.
Darmanin said he had been told by police that the attacker reportedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack.
Video taken at the scene showed Paris police cars, ambulances and firefighters arriving at the scene, with heavy traffic being diverted. A number of safeguards were also carried out.
Residents and tourists have also been advised to avoid the area.
