At a time when the Philadelphia crowd was feverishly calling for his team to defend, Josh Hart hesitated for a second after Jalen Brunson gave him the ball from the left wing.
Then, he realized the 76ers weren’t guarding him. Alone, he dared to shoot from behind the arc.
“I was able to put my feet down well and I simply shot without anyone being in front of me,” he said.
Hart hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 24.4 seconds left, and the New York Knicks beat Philadelphia 118-115 on Thursday, moving into the second round of the playoffs.
Hart raised his arms and showed three fingers on each hand when he made the decisive basket.
Brunson had 41 points and 12 assists to lead the Knicks, who will face Indiana in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Pacers defeated Milwaukee in six games and advanced to the second round of the postseason for the first time in 10 years.
The first game of the series will take place in New York.
The Knicks have advanced to the second round of the playoffs in consecutive years, something they have not achieved since the period from 1992 to 2000.
