The photo of a Catholic nun in plain white clothes stretched out, appealing to the Myanmar military forces that went viral and drew praise in the Buddhist-majority country.
“I am on my knees … begging them (soldiers) not to shoot and torture the children, but to shoot and kill me,” Sister Ann told AFP as quoted from CBS News, Tuesday (9/3/2021).
The heroic action of Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng took place in the city of Myitkyina on Monday. At that time the protester took to the streets of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin state, wearing a building helmet and carrying a homemade shield.
As the police began to gather around them, Sister Ann Rose Nu Tawng and two other nuns begged them to leave.
“The police are chasing to arrest them and I’m worried about the children,” he said. It was at this time that the 45 year old nun knelt down.
Moments later, as he pleaded for restraint, the police started shooting at the crowd of protesters behind him.
