Curaçao has also won its third match in the World Cup qualifying tournament. In Guatemala City, the team of national coach Patrick Kluivert won 8-0 against the British Virgin Islands.
Within thirty minutes it was already 6-0 for Curaçao, which started the match with many well-known names from the Eredivisie.
Brandley Kuwas (known from Excelsior and Heracles) opened the score, after which Michaël Maria (former FC Twente), Leandro Bacuna (former FC Groningen) and Charlison Benschop (including former AZ and FC Groningen) scored in quick succession. Maria and Benschop were both accurate twice.
In the second half, substitute Kenji Gorré (son of Dean, who is the national coach of Suriname) made it 8-0 for Curaçao with two hits.
Curaçao leads group C of CONCACAF, the federation for North and Central America. However, the road to the World Cup in Qatar is still complicated for Kluivert’s team.
After this first round, the group winners will play two knockout matches to qualify for the third round, which will also include Honduras, the United States, Costa Rica, Mexico and Jamaica. The best three countries then qualify for the World Cup, the number four can also qualify via intercontinental play-offs.
