After its alarming slump in results in this 2021, Liverpool marches in sixth position in the Premier, two points behind West Ham (5th), the team that would now qualify for the Europa League, and five from Chelsea, the last in Champions League places.
The ‘reds’ have nine league games ahead of them in which to be or not to be in Europe are at stake. If not entering the Champions League would already be traumatic, not qualifying for the Europa League would be disastrous.
Even so, Jürgen Klopp wanted to relativize the fact that the team does not play in European competition next season, something that has not happened since the 2013/14 season.
“It would mean a great financial loss. Otherwise, not so much. I am aware: in almost all football clubs in the world, I would be questioned in a situation like the current one. This is completely normal, reality, business. I would accept it immediately. But it is different here in Liverpool. Our owners, the sports director, even the players: no one doubts anyone here. We have accepted the situation for ourselves and we are fighting to overcome it, ”he commented in a chat with Lothar Matthaus at SportBild.
Klopp also admitted that he is pessimistic about Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four. “I like to be optimistic, but in this league it is almost impossible to qualify for the Champions League because of the great competition we have.”
“At Tottenham Gareth Bale plays again, and they are also in the race. More City and United, who are far away. Chelsea is on the rise. Reaching qualification for the Champions League through the league will be difficult, we know that ”, he added.
One way Liverpool could qualify for the Champions League would be to win this year’s edition of the top continental competition. At the moment the ‘reds’ are already in the quarterfinals after eliminating RB Leipzig. This Friday they will meet their rival in the next round.
