Klopp reiterates concerns about footballers’ game workload

Jürgen Klopp has long been of the opinion that players should be given more breaks to protect them from injury.

Referring to NFL quarterback Tom Brady, Klopp has once again called for better player protection. Brady announced his retirement from retirement a few weeks ago and will remain with the NFL at least until the age of 45. The 44-year-old is arguably the best NFL player of all time and remains in top form.

The Liverpool FC coach would like to see stories like this more often in football. He is of course aware that American football cannot be directly compared to soccer. Nevertheless, such a lengthy career as Brady’s is only possible because of the long summer break. “We saw Tom Brady talking to Ronaldo in Manchester. He’s had a four-month break so he can play until he’s 54, for example.”

Appeal for five changes in the Premier League

According to Klopp, one way to protect players more is to avoid unnecessary international friendlies.

In addition, it is now possible to change five times in almost all top leagues in Europe. This was initially introduced for the multiple strains of the pandemic and the tight game schedule. However, many leagues are currently keeping this up.

In the Premier League, there are still only three possible changes. Jürgen Klopp also sees room for improvement here. “I know it’s a tradition with the three substitutions and all, but the game has developed extremely and that’s why I’m sure it should be five substitutions.”

Finally, Klopp once again lays out his motivations behind the repeated attempts to relieve the players of the high strain. “We just have to make sure we’re protecting the most valuable part of this game – that’s the players and nobody else.”
