Withdrawing the aid would mean the bankruptcy of KLM, whose future is already hanging by a thread. Without a loan package of € 3.4 billion, the airline will not be able to survive the corona crisis. Last week, KLM submitted a restructuring plan in order to claim the loans. The corona crisis has hit aviation very hard. There is hardly any traveling, because borders are closed.
“In these times it is important that parties act together,” says chairman Marnix Fruitema of the Barin aviation umbrella. Around 100,000 direct and indirect jobs are attached to KLM. “Strict nuisance and environmental conditions have been set for KLM. In other countries, governments have also supported their airlines and imposed conditions. KLM does not live on an island, we already have a pioneering role. ” For example, KLM will be obliged to use 14% renewable fuel by 2030, it will have to give up night flights and reduce CO2 emissions. But Greenpeace does not think that is enough.
Minister Hoekstra (Finance) said earlier in the announcement of the case that he has confidence in the outcome. According to him, the conditions for the loans meet all the requirements of the European Commission. For the time being, the environmental activists have only gone to court in the Netherlands. The environmentalists think they have a chance because Urgenda got the state on its knees earlier via a lawsuit about the climate and duty of care. KLM was not available for comment.
