KLM has canceled at least 66 return flights for today due to fog in combination with temperatures around freezing at Schiphol. The planes at the airport suffer from frozen fog, which creates a layer of ice on the aircraft.
“Due to the persistent freezing fog, aircraft have to be de-iced,” said an airline spokesperson. De-icing involves removing ice from the wings of an aircraft using concentrated liquids so that the aircraft can take off safely. That process takes some time.
According to KLM, there is also limited runway capacity at Schiphol, meaning that a smaller number of aircraft can take off and land than normal.
European flights in particular are not departing
Flights to and from European destinations in particular have been cancelled. This concerns flights from both KLM and KLM Cityhopper.
“This causes great inconvenience for our passengers. We are busy rebooking passengers on the next flight,” the spokesperson said.
