KLM customers who prefer not to be addressed as male or female can now indicate this when booking. They can indicate that they identify as non-binary or choose to omit the address altogether.
When travelers indicate that they want to omit the address, the airline simply calls them by name.
KLM also recently decided to say ‘dear passengers’ instead of ‘ladies and gentlemen’ on board. Later this year, the airline will adjust even more steps in the check-in process. This has not yet happened, so KLM will address these passengers with X when checking in.
KLM writes in a statement that its customers have diverse cultural backgrounds and therefore different needs. The airline wants to make customers feel valued in their own way.
Earlier this month, KLM decided to decorate the fuselage of an aircraft with rainbow flags. And in February, the airline announced it was looking at gender-neutral uniforms to give staff room to be who they want to be.
