Kleve district: Warning of new scams via Messenger

In addition to grandchildren’s tricks, “fake policemen” or fake bank clerks, the police are increasingly registering new scams across the district.

The unknown fraudsters use messenger services such as WhatsApp to contact older people and pretend to be a son, daughter, relative or friend. They claim to have a new cell phone number, mostly on the pretext that the old smartphone is defective. If you win the trust of the people you have written to, ask for a transfer because you are allegedly having difficulties with online banking with the new device. At the Kripo there are currently two advertisements where this messenger scam was unfortunately successful in the Kleve district – with amounts in the four-digit range.

The police advise:

– Be suspicious of someone else’s phone number

contacted via a messenger service and asked for money

become.

– Contact the alleged author of the message at

the number you know.

– If in doubt, contact people you trust or the

Police!
