They have been active in club boards or aid organizations for many years, often decades – whether in the cultural, social, sporting, scientific or civic field, in the fire brigade or in one of the numerous aid organizations. Or they have made special contributions to sport as an individual athlete or with a team. “With this award, we want to thank these people for their many years of commitment or honor them for their success in a national or international sports championship,” said District Administrator Christoph Gerwers. The ceremonial award ceremony with medals and certificates will take place for the first time in 2025. The people to be honored must be resident in the Kleve district or have achieved their special achievement or special merit in the district or at a sports club in the Kleve district.

The district council has adopted a “Guideline for the award for special achievements and merits” that sets out the details for applying for the award. For example, “long-term commitment” requires that the activity has been carried out for at least 20 years or has been carried out for at least 20 years.
All sports in which competitions are held at least at a national level are eligible for the sports awards. The athlete or team must, for example, have achieved at least 3rd place on the podium at a national championship. Or they have taken part in the Olympic Games, World and European Championships or achieved 1st to 6th place there. This applies accordingly to performances at the Paralympics as well as the Special Olympic World Games and other corresponding competitions at national and international level. The award can also be given if the sporting foundations for it were laid in the Kleve district. For the sports awards, the corresponding placement should have been achieved between 2020 and 2024.
The student councils and professional associations, the mayors of the municipalities in the district, the factions and groups represented in the district council and the district administrator are entitled to submit proposals. Sports clubs in the Kleve district can also submit proposals for the sports awards. There is no legal entitlement to this award from the Kleve district. All details of the guidelines adopted by the district council and the online form for submitting the application have been posted on the Kleve district website (www.kreis-kleve.de / Search term: Sports and volunteer awards). Anyone who would like to submit a suggestion in writing can download a form from the website mentioned above. Suggestions – whether online or by post (Kleve District, District Administrator’s Office, Nassauerallee 15-23, 47533 Kleve) – can be submitted until Friday, November 8, 2024.
