Music (Austria 2023, first broadcast) Since 2013, the mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča and her husband, the conductor Karel Mark Chichon, have been organizing “Klassik in den Alpen” in Kützbühel every summer. The gala concert is now one of the most atmospheric open-air events in Europe. For the tenth anniversary, the singer once again presented highlights of previous events as well as arias that she has never sung before an audience of around 2,000.
“Classic in the Alps”
A personal premiere for Garanča was the aria “Vissi d’arte” from Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Tosca”. Conductor Chichon had put together a medley for the special anniversary occasion: under the title “Around the World” he chose popular songs from all over the world, including “My Way” and “New York, New York”. There were also Austrian favorites such as “My lips, they kiss so hot” from “Giuditta” and the Vilja song from “The Merry Widow”, both operettas by Franz Lehár. All parts of the medley were also sung for the first time by Elīna Garanča.
Musical guests were the Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura, who took over for Eleonora Buratto, who was ill, the South Korean tenor SeokJong Baek and Felix Pacher, this year’s winner of Garanča’s “ZukunftsStimmen” competition to promote young talent. They were all accompanied by the Vienna Volksoper Symphony Orchestra. The concert was recorded on July 8th.
