Klæbo breaks own financial record, earning over four million from FIS – ABC Nyheter

27. mars 2023 10:03 – Updated March 27, 2023 10:03 am

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo earned 4.3 million in FIS prize money this season. It is close to doubling his old record.

Klæbo has a phantom winter behind him. On Sunday, he ended the World Cup season with another victory in the 20-kilometer race in Lahti. It was his 19th individual win this winter. No one has more in history.

The success has also resulted in ringing coin in the coffers. Klæbo has secured a formidable 380,800 Swiss francs in prize money from the International Skiing and Snowboarding Federation (FIS). This corresponds to NOK 4.3 million.

The 26-year-old has never been close to a similar season payment. His old best listing dates from the 2018/19 season, when he finished at 207,500 Swiss francs, equivalent to NOK 2.35 million at today’s rate.

WC prize money extra

The World Cup income for FIS has looked like this for Klæbo since he made his debut:

* 2022/2023 – 4.3 million

* 2021/2022 – 1.66 million

* 2020/2021 – 866.000

* 2019/2020 – 1.67 million

* 2018/2019 – 2.35 million

* 2017/2018 – 1.92 million

* 2016/2017 – 1.34 million

On top of the 4.3 million Klæbo has received from the FIS this season, prize money from the FIS comes from the Planica WC. There, the trønder won three golds and two silvers. It also gives a good chunk of money in the coffers.

Sundby earned more

Bonus payments from sponsors are guaranteed to also provide a nice supplement beyond the pure prize money.

The 4.3 million Klæbo has entered the World Cup this winter, however, is no record in cross-country skiing. The last time a runner entered as much or more was in 2015/16. Martin Johnsrud Sundby then ended up with a total payout from FIS of 407,200 Swiss francs. This corresponds to NOK 4.64 million at today’s exchange rate.

På Golberg and Simen Hegstad Krüger also follow Klæbo on the men’s FIS money list this season with earnings of NOK 2.1 and NOK 1.6 million respectively.
