Klæbo admits “game of chance” – thanks his girlfriend for the joy of Christmas – VG

DAVOS (VG) Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (25) celebrates Christmas in the Alps in Switzerland with his girlfriend to be best equipped for the Olympics.

– My attitude is that I do not “safe” to be in the top ten in the Olympics. I take a chance that I can have my best days there. Either I succeed – or I do not. It is a chance I am willing to take, says Klæbo to VG ahead of the World Cup in Davos.

There is a sprint (Saturday from 14:15 on TV 2) and 15 km free (11:40 Sunday on TV 2). Fashionable Davos, Europe’s highest city, is located at 1560 meters.

Klæbo will stay here until the Tour de Ski starts in Lenzerheide on December 28 to get as much altitude training as possible before the Olympics. The games in Beijing are at an altitude of 1800 meters.

– For my part, I think it is right to be as high as possible and as acclimatized as possible. I have to create that experience in a short time, says Klæbo.

From previous seasons, the 25-year-old has little experience with height. But this autumn he has been as much as possible in thin mountain air in Italy. Before, Klæbo has had success with getting to races in the heights without being acclimatized.

– I feel the body plays more and more on teams. I hope for a slow but sure lift. But it does not have to come before February, says Klæbo and smiles wisely.

The family does not come to the Christmas celebration in Switzerland, but next week cohabitant Pernille Døsvik comes and saves Klæbos from a lonely Christmas abroad, as Address has mentioned.

– I am very grateful that I do not have to sit alone. It should have gone well, but it is of course much more pleasant to have Pernille, says Klæbo in the foreground of high mountains with snow-covered trees – a perfect sight to get in the Christmas spirit.

– That she bothers to sacrifice her Christmas with her family to be here, I really appreciate. We must try to make the best of the days we get here.

– She is very understanding of how the situation is. That’s how it is for the whole gang on the team. It works well, but that we get a few days together here is very good and it will be good to take with us into January and February where there will be many days away, says Klæbo.

Klæbo took three golds in the Pyeongchang Olympics, Seefeld WC and Oberstdorf WC (diskette from number four). People obviously have high expectations of him in China.

He basically wants to go to all six Olympic races.

– It will be exciting to see if it is possible. It may be too brutal. You will take that along the way. The recovery time is somewhat different in height. Fortunately, there are more days of rest in the Olympics than in the World Cup.

All-round coach Eirik Myhr Nossum takes out the teams with sprint coach Arild Monsen, while the withdrawals must be approved by cross-country manager Espen Bjervig and the cross-country committee.

– Johannes is an obvious candidate to run six races, so he must consider it together with those closest to him if it is smart. He is not one to go six races just to go six races. He is rather over a race to improve the chances, says Nossum.
