“The residents of Varnavas, Marathon, Grammatiko, Nea Makri, Nea Penteli, Vrilissi, Chalandrio and other areas of Attica are once again experiencing the tragic consequences of the criminal government policy in the field of fire protection . The huge destruction in North and East Attica and the extension of the fire to the residential fabric of the capital, signals the complete bankruptcy of the government planning that was advertised with big mouths and finally buried in the ashes” emphasizes in a statement, the KKE, and points out:
“Government is once again held accountable for its complete lack of integrated fire protection planning within prevention-focused forest management. And as infuriating as the lack of such a plan is, just as infuriating are the cheap excuses it uses in order to hide its criminal responsibilities for a huge disaster that has been repeated in Eastern Attica for years.
Given that the fire fighting season has neither formally nor practically ended, we demand that the government take now and without delay, all the necessary measures, to ensure the necessary infrastructure and means in order to avoid a new disaster”.
The KKE, concluding its announcement, underlines that:
“A critical issue in these difficult times is the relief, support and protection of all affected residents and professionals. That is why it is required:
– a complete and substantial record of the destruction, the burned areas and the people’s property.
– immediate and substantial support and rehabilitation of those affected by the fires with full compensations at 100% of their losses, without terms and conditions.
– securing housing at state expense, for those in need and for the time required until the damage is repaired.
– coverage of insurance contributions under the responsibility of the state and exemption from tax obligations, freezing of the payment of loans, auctions for all those affected.
It is also necessary to declare all burned forests and forest lands as reforestable, regardless of the ownership status, and to immediately draw up a plan for the comprehensive protection and management of forests. No change in character and land use. No thought for business plans on the burnt!”.
