Kjell Magne Bondevik: – Unfortunate by Biden

Last weekend, US President Joe Biden stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin “can not remain in power.” Norway’s former Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik (KrF) tells Dagbladet that it was unfortunate and that it could lead to escalation.

– It was unfortunate of Biden to say that Putin can not remain in power. This is because they then almost advocate for a change of regime in Russia. Fortunately, the White House has adjusted the statement in retrospect and I hope that Moscow emphasizes the clarification, Bondevik says to Dagbladet and continues:

– It is clear that it can lead to escalation when such words fall into an already terrible and dangerous situation.

– It is important to maintain control

The words fell when Biden spoke to the people of Warsaw. Shortly after the speech, the White House stated that Biden was actually trying to say that Putin could not be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors in the region. In retrospect, Biden has said that he stands by his original statement, but emphasized that he does not advocate a change of regime in Russia.

– What guidelines do you have as head of state for what you can say about other heads of state?

– You do not always say what you mean, to put it that way. Especially when it can aggravate an already difficult situation. I can understand Biden, but it’s important to stay in control. To avoid adverse effects, we often had talking points that we tried to stick to when we spoke in difficult situations, says Bondevik.

“War criminal” and “butcher”

Both Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken in the United States and Prime Minister Olaf Scholz in Germany have assured that neither the United States nor NATO will advocate a regime change in Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that any escalation, either in word or deed, could damage attempts to negotiate with Putin.

Recently, Biden described Putin as both a war criminal and a butcher. Although it may be perceived as more crude to refer to Putin as a butcher, Bondevik thinks it was worse to say that Putin can not remain in power.

– As a head of state, you must comply with international law and justice and then you must not advocate for a change of regime in another country. But that heads of state sometimes use strong characteristics about each other, you just have to live with, says Bondevik and continues:

– I can understand that Biden did it, but it is not certain that it will help to reach a solution in the negotiations. I hope that Russia manages to look past that and rather concentrate on preventing further human suffering.
