It was in the middle of the European Championship match between Denmark and Finland at Parken in the Danish capital Copenhagen that the home team’s big star, Christian Eriksen, suddenly collapsed on the pitch. It was later confirmed that the accident had occurred as a result of a cardiac arrest and a few days later Eriksen was discharged from the hospital he was admitted to after the collapse.
Together with doctors who acted quickly after the cardiac arrest, Denmark’s team captain, Simon Kjær, now receives the Uefa President’s honorary award in 2021. Eriksen’s countryman was quickly present and contributed to the work that led to Christian Eriksen living today.
– I am grateful for the leadership Kjaer showed when it was needed most. I also have the greatest respect for all doctors who reacted quickly and showed calm in a situation that was life and death for Christian, says Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin in a comment on Uefa’s website.
Christian Eriksen, for his part, says the following:
– I want to thank all my friend and captain Simon who together with my teammates saved my life. Thanks also to everyone who has shown support in recent months. It means a lot.
