Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire – Embracing African Cultures and Imagining a Bold Future

Disney Plus has released a new anthology series of short films called “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire,” produced by South African animation studio Triggerfish. The series showcases the influence of Marvel’s “Black Panther” franchise on Disney as a production company. With projects like “Star Wars: Visions,” Disney has embraced the global audience’s hunger for fantastical worlds created by bold African filmmakers.

Each of the 10-minute-long shorts in “Kizazi Moto” explores different aspects of Africa’s future and African cultures. They are distinct and informed by the sci-fi pop cultural canon. The series does not feel the need to make itself relatable in Hollywood’s typical sense, instead centering African cultures and worldviews.

The shorts in “Kizazi Moto” are diverse in their themes and storytelling styles. “Mkhuzi: The Spirit Racer,” directed by Simangaliso Sibaya and Malcolm Wope, is an action-packed adventure about a young boy who races speed-addicted aliens to protect his neighborhood. Nigerian-born illustrator Shofela Coker’s “Moremi” reimagines the legend of the Yoruba queen, incorporating elements of “Frankenstein” and other works inspired by Mary Shelley’s novel. Other chapters, such as “Enkai” by Kenyan animator Ng’endo Mukii and “You Give Me Heart” by Lesego Vorster, humanize gods by exploring their anxieties about work and perception.

Despite their brevity, the shorts in “Kizazi Moto” do not feel rushed. They are compact and often surprise viewers with their lack of clear resolution. The series feels fully formed and does not come across as mere proofs of concept. This is likely due to the understanding of executive producers Peter Ramsey, Anthony Silverston, and Tendayi Nyeke, who provided resources and space for the storytellers to bring their visions to life.

“Kizazi Moto” stands out from other Disney projects by not downplaying its cultural specificity to appeal to a universal audience. The series effortlessly incorporates multiple languages spoken across Africa, inviting viewers to appreciate the realities and beauty of African cultures.

Regardless of one’s preferred sci-fi or animation style, there is something in “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” that will resonate personally. The series showcases some of the best and most exciting animation from outside the US, and it introduces promising new talents to the audience.

The first season of “Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire” is now available for streaming on Disney Plus.
