Pixar, that kiss between two women from the movie Lightyear had it cut, has now put it in the film anyway. It does so after protests from fans and employees because Disney stood aside from a controversial change in education law in Florida.

According to film magazine Variety does Pixar have a scene out Lightyearabout the Toy story-character Buzz Lightyear, pulled out of the trash again. In that scene, Hawthorne (voiced by actress Uzo Aduba), Buzz Lightyear’s female sidekick, will kiss her lover. The relationship between the two women would be clear anyway, but the kiss scene didn’t make it to the original montage, according to Variety.
Recovering from the kiss is likely an attempt to end the PR nightmare that Disney had landed in the aftermath of the controversial ‘Don’t say gay’ law in the state of Florida. Officially, this law is called the ‘parental rights in education bill’. She has banned schools in Florida from talking about sexual orientation or gender through third grade. The Republicans believe that parents have the exclusive right to that conversation with their children. Critics renamed the bill ‘don’t say gay’. They denounce the homophobic nature.
angry letter
Disney, which has significant political power in Florida, originally kept quiet about the potential law change. This came in for fierce criticism, also internally. Pixar’s LGBTI employees revealed in a letter that Disney’s top has deleted scenes involving same-sex affection. They didn’t say which titles were involved.
Did the ground get too hot under Disney’s feet on that? Shortly after the letter, CEO Bob Chapek already turned his back. He took a stand against the law and apologized to his employees whom he had “abandoned.” Too little, too latemany thought. Three days earlier, the Senate had already passed the law. Republican Governor Ron Desantis is determined to sign it.
It remains to be seen whether the kiss is in Lightyear cool the anger at Pixar. However, it seems certain that “thanks to” Republican efforts to avoid exposing young children to sexual orientation or gender issues, you may soon be seeing the first kiss between two same-sex characters in a Disney movie.
Correction 3/21: Originally this article stated that Ron Desantis was a senator. This is incorrect and has been corrected.
