Detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) heads from Washington to Durham, North Carolina, where his niece Naomi finds herself on the missing persons list. Cross learns from the local police that Naomi is the latest in a series of young women who have disappeared without a trace. Soon after his arrival, one of the missing women is found dead. Shortly afterwards, intern Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd) is also kidnapped from her home. When the dazed Kate wakes up, she discovers that she is being held captive by a masked man who calls himself Casanova, and that she is one of the many victims held captive in his lair.
