[KISAH INSPIRASI ISLAM] King of Abyssinia, a Christian who Protects Muslims from Persecution

KOMPAS.com – There was a mass in the history of Islam, in Mecca there was an increasing persecution of Muslims, at the beginning of the prophecy of the Prophet Muhammad.

Thus, the Prophet Muhammad instructed a group of people to seek refuge in Abyssinia, which was ordered by a Christian king who had the reputation of being a just leader.

According to Islamic historical records quoted from Al Arabiya English, Abyssinia, a Christian region now known as Ethiopia, was ruled by a just and just king known as the Negus (Najasyi).

Fleeing acts of persecution, Muslims sought a place to worship and exercise their faith in peace.

They traveled through the Red Sea by ship until they landed in Africa.

At that time it was the first emigration in Islam, according to historical records. There are between 70 and 80 Muslims traveling to Abyssinia.

However, the leaders of the Quraysh in Mecca were determined to pursue them, for fear that the Muslims would build a fort for them there, if the Abyssinians converted to Islam.

They asked the king to expel them as soon as possible, on the grounds that the Muslims “created” a religion that was against their religion and the Najasyi religion.

They also showered the ministers of Najasyi with gifts, in an effort to seek their support. And they succeeded.

The ministers asked Najasyi to expel the Muslims, but he refused to hand them over to his land. The Muslims were brought before the king, and Jafar ibn Abi Talib, a cousin of the Prophet, was chosen to speak to Najasyi.

With his eloquence and wisdom, Jafar spoke to the king of Abyssinia, saying, “O King, we are people who are drowning in ignorance, worshiping idols, eating unscrupulous carcasses, committing abominations, and the strong will devour the weak.”

“Thus we remained in this state until Allah (The One True God) sent us a Prophet, from among us, whose lineage, honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity we know.”

When the Abyssinian king asked Jafar to name any revelations the Prophet had from God, Jafar read the Quranic verses from the Letter of Mary, about the story of Jesus.

Jafar, with his rich and melodious voice recited to Najasyi part of Surah Maryam from Verses 19 to 32.

“And mention Mary in the Book, when she withdrew from her people to a place to the east, and withdrew from them. And We sent to him Our Spirit, and he manifested himself in the form of a perfect man. “

Later, he ordered his ministers to stop the Meccan delegation and return their gifts.

The king of Abyssinia then turned to Jafar and his group and said, “Your Prophet is accepted. I acknowledge that he is the Apostle to whom Jesus has given the good news. Stay wherever you like in my country.”
