The route of the Golden Globe Race starts and ends in the port of Les Ables-Dolons in the Bay of Biscay in western France. The rules of the regatta stipulate that sailors in the Southern Ocean have to round the three Capes without stopping – the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, Cape Luin in Australia and Cape Horn in South America. The length of the route is 30 thousand nautical miles.
Following the traditions of the first “Golden Globe Race” regatta in 1968-1969, participants are prohibited from using modern means of communication and navigation. Thus, sailors lead the regatta without knowing their true position in the race.
According to the rules, only boats built before 1988 can participate in the regatta. They must have a hull length of 32 to 36 feet and a minimum displacement of 6,200 kilograms.
The race started on September 4, 2022. 16 sailors participated in the regatta. Only five made it to the finish line.
According to Yachting Monthly, 39-year-old Neuschaffer finished the race in the port of Les Ables-Dolons around 9:00 p.m. on April 27. Her official finish time was 233 days 20 hours 43 minutes and 47 seconds.
Neuschaffer spent more than 235 days at sea on his boat Minnehaga. But she was awarded 35 hours of time compensation and 30 liters of fuel for rescuing Finnish captain Tapio Lehtinen, whose boat sank in the Indian Ocean about 450 miles southeast of South Africa in November.
After receiving a distress signal, the athlete deviated from the route 105 miles to find Lehtinen. After rescuing the captain, she waited for the arrival of the dry cargo ship that took the Finnish athlete to land and then returned to the race herself.
Kirsten Neuschaffer wasn’t the first to finish in the 2022 Golden Globe Race. In the competition, British captain Simon Curwen was leading by a large margin almost all the time. However, due to damage, he had to go to the port of Argentina once for repairs and could not claim the victory. Neuschaffer finished about ten hours after Kerwen. Her closest follower was Abilash Tommy from India, who stayed about 100 miles from Neushafer.
When Neuschaffer entered a French port, she was presented with a bottle of champagne and then a packet of ice cream.
Kirsten Neuschafer has been passionate about sailing since childhood and has been doing it professionally since 2006.
According to “Yachting Monthly” data, during the 2022-2023 regatta, Neuschäfer set several records at once – for the best average speed in four hours (9.80 knots), the best distance in 24 hours (218.9 nautical miles), the best distance in a week (1,216.2 nautical miles), and the first woman in history to win the Golden Globe Race around the world.
