The European Parliament will discuss on Wednesday the case of the arrest of the president of the GERB and the former prime minister Boyko Borisov in March of this year, and the former prime minister and leader of “Let’s continue the change” Kiril Petkov saw in this “a desperate move by Borisov to use the EPP to clean up his reputation in the face of the millions of citizens in Bulgaria who are disappointed in his government”.
“But I will say it very clearly: we are firmly determined to bring Boyko Borisov to justice … Will Borisov go to prison? Of one thing I am sure: this will not happen if our political opponents win the elections.” commented Petkov on Facebook.
Borisov, for his part, compared Kiril Petkov and Asen Vassilev to the “aggressor Putin”.
The EP will discuss Borissov’s arrest
The point of discussion of the arrest is placed on the agenda under the title “Illegal detention of the opposition leader in Bulgaria”. An EP announcement specifies that the debate is “on a topical issue, at the request of a political group, in the presence of the European Commission and the Council of the EU”.
The political group in which the deputies of the GERB participate is the European People’s Party (EPP). Its president Manfred Weber is in close relationship with Boyko Borisov.

It is added that, pursuant to Article 162 of the EP Rules of Procedure, each political group has the right to propose a topic for discussion on a subject of great interest to EU policy.
A representative of the political group that proposed the issue under consideration will introduce the debate. The EP is not expected to adopt a resolution, BTA reported.
Also on Wednesday, MEPs will hear the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the state of the EU. The issues of support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, measures to guarantee energy supply to the EU and to limit dependence on Russian fossil fuels, energy prices will be touched upon.
On the same day, a debate is scheduled in the European Parliament on the danger of a serious violation by Hungary of EU values. Hungary can no longer be perceived as a full-fledged democracy, according to MEPs, says an announcement by the European Parliament, quoted by BTA. In a draft report providing an overview of events since the EP activated Article 7 of the EU Treaty four years ago, MEPs say that European values are permanently threatened in Hungary. On Thursday, the report is expected to be put to a vote and should support the assessment that democracy and fundamental rights in the country have further deteriorated since 2018. The EP should call for the suspension of economic recovery funds for Hungary until Budapest it will not abide by the recommendations and judgments of the courts.

Kiril Petkov: Borisov’s administration is corruption and a packaged plot
Later, Kiril Petkov commented that his party was determined to bring Borisov to justice.
“But I will say it very clearly: we are firmly determined to bring Boyko Borisov to justice. Borisov ruled Bulgaria for 12 years. It is 12 years of lack of control, corruption, schemes with packages and bars. Therefore, after October 2, we want reform the Anti-Corruption Commission so that it prosecutes the corrupt and follows the path of Borisov’s money. This is the only possible way for Bulgaria if we want to stop being the poorest and most corrupt country in the European Union “.
“I will not comment on whether it is normal for European institutions to interfere in the electoral campaign in Bulgaria, nor will I comment on Borisov’s desperate move to use the EPP to clean up his reputation in front of the millions of citizens in Bulgaria who are disappointed in his government.” Petkov added.
Borisov compared Kiril Petkov and Asen Vassilev to Putin
The leader of the GERB compared the leaders of “Let’s continue the change” Kiril Petkov and Asen Vassilev with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Inflation will be lower in Ukraine, because they have only one aggressor – Putin. We have two here – Kiro and Asen. (…) I didn’t expect them to break the state that much. If people really know what these are. the people have done, what they have done, is broken, so broken. The elections will come and go. The question is how to stabilize the country. This is the most important thing. ” Borisov said.
