The legendary musician had a severe brain injury. The concert was canceled due to the incident. Police have cordoned off the area.

One of Kiril Marichkov’s last public appearances was at this year’s Apollonia Arts Festival in Sozopol.

The forum was closed with a concert by the “Foundation”. At the time, he said that this concert was special for him because it was his first appearance after an illness that took him off the stage for five months.

In May of this year, Marichkov stopped his tour in the USA and Canada with the group “The Foundation” because of an accident he suffered in our country shortly before leaving for the Ocean.
The legendary musician passed away just days before his 80th birthday.

Kiril Kirilov Marichkov was born on October 30, 1944. Singer, musician and composer, best known for his work in the rock band “Crickets”.

Marichkov is a descendant of the prominent Bulgarian revolutionary and politician Georgi Stranski. He is the grandson of the prominent architect Kiro Marichkov, and on his mother’s side – of the conductor Boris Leviev. His father, Kiril Kirilov Marichkov, studied law and diplomacy first at the Sorbonne in Paris, then in Lausanne. Bulgaria’s first ambassador to the Vatican after 1989. His mother, Irina Levieva, is an artist.

Marichkov’s first steps in the musical field were the rock formation “Bandaracets”. There he played bass guitar, and in 1967, after Bandaratsi broke up, Marichkov and drummer Petar Tsankov founded Sturtsi.

Kiril Marichkov achieved his greatest successes as a musician and performer precisely with “Crickets”.

The group was formed in 1967, and its name was chosen after a radio broadcast contest. At first, the young musicians played cover versions or compositions of well-established pop composers, but gradually they focused on building their own sound, based on original compositions, distinguished by a variety of styles – rock and roll, hard rock and progressive rock. Kiril Marichkov is the frontman, bassist, singer and main composer of his band. In the list of songs created by him are hits such as “Rock in the Past”, “The Taste of Time”, “The Horseman”, “Oath”, “Magic Color”.

“Crickets” are one of the bands, along with FSB, Signal and Ahat, that can claim the title “the most influential Bulgarian rock band of the 20th century”.

With the suspension of the active creative and concert activity of the Rats, Kiril Marichkov devoted himself to solo projects and public engagements.

His first solo effort was the soundtrack of the cult film “Yesterday”, featuring the song “Oath”.

Later, he released two solo albums (“Zodiya Sturets” and “I want to say”), in the recordings of which both guest musicians and the other members of Sturtsi participated. He sometimes reunites with his bandmates for individual concerts or short tours, such as “40 Years of Crickets” in the summer of 2007 to mark the band’s 40th anniversary. In 2011, he was a mentor in “The Voice of Bulgaria”. His team makes it to the finals, but doesn’t win the competition. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Foundation supergroup.

In 2019, he released the album “75”.

Along with dozens of Bulgarian cultural figures such as Vasil Naydenov, Bogdana Karadocheva, Todor Kolev, Yosif Sarchadzhiev, Stefan Dimitrov, Blaga Dimitrova, Vasko Krpkata, etc., in the early 90s of the 20th century, Kiril Marichkov was actively involved in the movement of the democratic opposition against BSP (former BKP) rule. In 1990, Marichkov was elected a representative from the list of the SDS coalition in the VII Great National Assembly, but later left it. During the election campaign, “Crickets” recorded the popular song “I’m Just a Man”, which became the unofficial anthem of the opposition.

In 2010, he was awarded the Order of “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” first degree for his particularly great merits in the field of culture and art.

In 2020, he also received the highest state award – Order of “Stara Planina” – 1st degree.

Tribute to his memory!
