“We had 150 people willing to donate”, writes the on-call manager Raphaela Jehle from the DRK local association in Hausach at the blood donation appointment on Wednesday in the Hausach town hall. However, these were only the 150 willing donors who were allowed to come. Due to the hygiene measures of the corona pandemic, only one blood donation team was on site, the blood donors had to register in advance via the homepage, and the appointments were booked out days in advance.
Eight young people had come for the first time to donate half a liter of their blood. Including Luca Franz, who took advantage of the first day he was allowed to donate blood: He celebrated his 18th birthday on Wednesday. “I had always decided that I would donate blood when I was 18, that it fell on that day was of course a coincidence,” he said.

Syringe phobia overcome
Luca Franz is in the twelfth grade of the commercial high school and will do his Abitur next year. He also spoke frankly about his “phobia of syringes,” which he had overcome in order to donate blood. Ultimately, however, the time before that was worse than the prick itself. “I took it well, everything went well,” he wants to encourage those who have not yet been able to bring themselves to donate blood: “There is hardly anything easier than that Donating blood to help other people, ”he says.
He now wants to become a regular donor. The members of the blood donation team and the local DRK association, which was on duty with 14 members on Wednesday, were also delighted with a very adult attitude towards coming of age.
The party for the 18th birthday of course didn’t work on Wednesday – “But that will be made up for as soon as it works again,” hopes Luca Franz. For the time being, the celebrations were with parents and sister.
