As previously reported, the moving film has been screened at the Riga International Film Festival (Riga IFF), it also had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Film of the Year. Its events tell of a father who is forced to find a new family for his son, but this task turns out to be more difficult than expected.
The film’s main character, John, played by British actor James Norton, is a young father who raises his four-year-old son Michael alone due to various twists and turns in life. For the sake of his health, he will soon have to divorce his child, but until then he must not only find new homes and a family, but also inherit so strong bricks of life that they will be able to support him for the rest of his life. The search for new parents is not easy between dozens of different families, creating doubts about the last days of life. However, despite difficult decisions, John appreciates every fragile moment with his son, providing care and love.
In the film you can watch the muted feelings and emotions, which are achieved with small glances or everyday, ordinary activities at home. Director Pazolini chose actor James Norton because he wanted someone who could achieve a lot by doing little. He says, “James can do it, technically he’s great. When I said I wanted to achieve what I wanted in the film with silence, he immediately understood and did what you see – feelings without acting. It’s hard to do.”
