Kinmen CountyS Little League team is making waves at the Power Cup with a standout player, Cai Shang’en, a Taiwanese-African athlete who brings a unique outlook to the field.
Cai, whose father hails from ivory Coast and mother from Kinmen, was born in the united States. He began his athletic journey playing tennis but discovered a passion for baseball after being invited by classmates. “Playing baseball is fun,” he says with a smile.
Coach Huang Guowei recognizes Cai’s natural athleticism. “He’s a swift learner,” huang notes, adding that Cai has only been playing baseball for about six months. Despite his relatively late start, Cai’s talent shines through, notably in the outfield.
“There are manny mountains,” Cai remarked about his first impressions of Hualien, where the Power Cup is being held. This is his second trip to Taiwan’s main island, and he relishes the possibility to compete against teams from across the country. “Everyone is very eager and powerful,” he observes.
When asked about his baseball idol,Cai’s face lights up. “jose De Paula,” he declares, referring to the CITIC Brothers’ foreign player.”He’s as dark as me,” Cai explains with a laugh, adding that De Paula’s presence inspires him to practice pitching.
Cai’s unique background has earned him nicknames like “Kinmen Ou Ziqiao” and ”Wanbo Shang’en.” Fluent in Chinese and English, with a touch of Taiwanese, he’s a true cultural bridge. While he hasn’t yet visited his father’s homeland, a planned trip to Africa to study French has been postponed until next year due to his commitment to the Power Cup.

**WTN:** Cai, tell us about your experience playing for the Kinmen County team.
**Cai:** It’s an amazing feeling. My mom is from Kinmen, so I feel connected to this place. The team has welcomed me with open arms and it’s been a lot of fun playing with them.
**WTN:** You were born in the United States and started playing tennis, but then switched to baseball. What sparked that change?
**Cai:** My classmates invited me to join them for baseball practice, and I instantly fell in love with the game. It’s fast-paced, exciting, and I enjoy the teamwork aspect.
**WTN:** Coach Huang, what are your impressions of Cai as a player? How has he enriched the team?
**Coach Huang:** Cai is a naturally gifted athlete. He’s quick, strong, and has a great eye for the ball.He brings a unique perspective to the game, and his enthusiasm is infectious.The other players look up to him, and he has really helped to lift the team’s morale.
**WTN:** Cai, you are seen as a bit of a “foreign player” because of your diverse heritage. How do you feel about that?
**Cai:** I’m proud of my heritage. My dad is from Ivory Coast, and my mom is from Kinmen. I feel lucky to have experienced different cultures and learn from them.
**WTN:** What are your aspirations for the future?
**Cai:** I want to keep playing baseball, hopefully at a higher level. I also want to learn more about my Taiwanese culture and heritage.
**WTN:** You are an inspiration to many young people, especially those from mixed backgrounds. What message do you have for them?
**Cai**: Follow your dreams, no matter where you come from or what challenges you face. embrace your uniqueness and use it as your strength.
