Orange profiteroles in Germany
Petra has been living in Germany for over twenty years. She has been celebrating King’s Day there since 2017 with a party for all her German friends. “Everyone comes in orange or red, white and blue. It’s fantastic to see how the Germans celebrate our national holiday! The catering naturally consists of everything that comes from the Netherlands: appetizers, sausage rolls, orange profiteroles and everything that is orange in color. Tonight we are with about sixty people. Preparations are in full swing – and the neighbors have been informed in case it is very noisy.”
Toast to the king in Greece
Moniek did an internship at the Dutch embassy in Athens six years ago, where they celebrated King’s Day together with colleagues. This year she did it again with a special guest. “During my internship I fell in love with a Greek and now – six years later – we live together in Greece! Who would have thought. Last week we celebrated King’s Day together at the embassy with other Dutch and Greek people and toasted the king!”
Norwegian colleagues at the orange tompouce
Naomi was often abroad on King’s Day. This year she celebrates it from Lillehammer in Norway and treated her colleagues to Dutch delicacies. “The evening before I made tompouces myself. I brought them to work for my colleagues. Delicious! I also painted my nails orange. To complete the look I wear a red, white and blue dress with a orange scarf and I have an orange bow in my hair and orange lips. Saturday I will go to Oslo where the Dutch Club organizes King’s Day with a free market, music, games and Dutch delicacies. That sounds very nice!”
Bitterballen in Vancouver
Woi-ling Wen celebrated King’s Day in Vancouver. According to her, one of the largest Dutch King’s Day celebrations in all of North America is held there every year. “This year there were no less than 350 guests, who danced the whole evening with a great band. Paired with a great meal and of course including the famous bitterballen.”
French favorite pub turns orange
Sanne has been living in the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence for three years. The holiday was not celebrated there, but this King’s Day enthusiast changed that. “Today is the second time that we are going to celebrate here. We have made sure that it is a big Orange party in our favorite pub (of course very French, where not even English is spoken). With a king’s playlist, homemade flags and all Dutch and everyone who loves the Netherlands. Of course in orange!”
Orange Festival in Bali
King’s Day is also celebrated in Bali. Marcella sends a photo from Canggu. “We celebrate King’s Day with all Dutch people who live in Bali.”
