An improved version of the gritty action Kingpin: Life of Crime originally from Xatrix Entertainment (later Gray Matter Studios) was announced back in January 2020. At the time, 3D Realms announced that it had teamed up with former publisher Interplay Entertainment and will release a remaster under the name Kingpin: Reloaded. At the same time, according to the first plans, it was supposed to be released in the same year, but in the end it did not happen due to problems during development. Due to the missing source code, the entire game had to be revived by reverse engineering.
Now, during the Realms Deep event, we learned that the game has finally received a release date. It will be launched on the market later this year, on December 5 to be exact. At the same time, fans were treated to a new video that demonstrates in more detail what potential buyers can look forward to. The authors promise that they have breathed a whole new life into the classic, which was originally powered by the Quake II engine.
Where did the console version go?
Studio Slipgate Ironworks entices with resolutions up to 4K aa 60 fps, support for ultra-wide-angle displays on PC and, of course, improved graphics in general. It goes without saying that gamepads are supported. According to the team, the gameplay has also been modified, and the new thing is the redesigned quest system. Multiplayer will also be revived.
On the aforementioned December 5th, the game will arrive on PC. Originally, however, a version for consoles was also announced, namely PS4, Xbox One and Switch. However, the studio does not mention its release now. We’ll see how it goes with other platforms.
The original game was quite controversial for its violence and explicit language. But she also attracted unwanted attention because she debuted shortly after the massacre at Columbine High School. Despite positive reviews, many stores in the United States refused to sell it. These were well-known important chains such as Best Buy, Wal-Mart or Toys “R” Us.
Viktor Antonov, who later became famous for games like Half-Life 2 or Dishonored, participated in the original as an artist. The soundtrack by the group Cypress Hill also deserves attention. Kingpin hit the shelves in June 1999. In addition to Windows, it was also released on Linux. From the review in the magazine Level in the 54th issue, it received a rating of 8.7 and Radek Friedrich wrote about the game that in his eyes Kingpin aspires to the title of the best 3D action of the year.
