Kingfishers win in Herne | Women’s Basketball Bundesliga

After a strong first half, the Kingfishers let the hosts take another sniff and gave them a big lead. But in the decisive phase, the Freiburg team had answers and in the end they stole the points from the Ruhr area. Top scorers are Christa Reed and Zakiyah Winfield with 15 points each.

The kingfishers, who traveled to Herne without Karla Gergelova, started like the fire department. After less than four minutes had been played, home coach Pietrowski had to call the second time-out despite the five-man substitution to stop Freiburg’s dream start (10-0). As a result, Herne also got into the game better, but the Kingfishers had an answer to everything. Above all, Christa Reed, who contributed three successful three-pointers in the first half, and Annika Soltau carried the Kingfishers offensively.

After the break, what every basketball coach fears. With a comfortable lead behind them, the kingfishers allowed themselves to be lulled by Herne, the pace was lost, the throws were no longer falling as they had been at the beginning, and step by step the HTC came closer. Even though the Kingfishers were able to maintain their lead with strong finishes from Emilly Kapitza and many trips to the free throw line, the inclined Freiburg fan had bad expectations.

Freiburg defies Zolper and Kulesha

In the fourth quarter, the hosts were suddenly there: In addition to the strong Kulesha, who repeatedly came up with lay-ups in the fast break, Laura Zolper also turned up the heat. With two quick three-pointers she gave HTC the first lead in the middle of the final period. But here too, the quick answer came from Britta Daub, who, after coast-to-coast dribbling, fired from beyond the three-point line and brought the Kingfishers back in front.

It should have been the only lead for the HTC, because in the final minutes of the game the Freiburg women were able to hold their own: the tireless Zakiyah Winfield not only collected the important rebounds (15 rebounds is a personal best!), but also found the ball twice the cutting Christa Reed, who extended Freiburg’s lead over time with two layups.

Played for Freiburg:

Winfield (15/1, 15 Reb), Scheu, Paradzik, Nufer, Soltau (12, 9 Reb), Daub (8/1), Kapitza (12, 6 Reb), Reed (15/3), Paunovic (4), Mayer (6/2)
