King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix are in Middelburg today at the presentation of the Four Freedoms Awards, where they will be warmly welcomed. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte is also present.
On Thursday morning, many people stand at the Balans in Middelburg with phones in their hands waiting for the royal couple. Around half past ten in the morning the time has finally come. The cars drive up and King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima get out. They shake hands with the people who are waiting. The queen wears a champagne-colored outfit from the Belgian fashion house Natan. Queen Máxima was also seen in this outfit during her state visit to Belgium in 2023.

Kiss from Queen Maxima
The royal couple also meet Princess Beatrix in front of the Abbey Square, who receives a kiss on the cheek from Queen Máxima. Together they walk towards the gate of the square, where the members of the royal family are solemnly greeted. The group then leaves for the church, where the Four Freedoms Awards ceremony takes place.

Four Freedoms Awards
The Four Freedoms Awards are based on the Four Freedoms that American President Franklin D. Roosevelt identified during a historic speech in 1941: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear. It is the 22nd time that the prestigious prizes have been awarded in the Zeeland capital. In odd years this happens in New York. The royal couple says they think it is important to attend that ceremony every two years. Not to award anything ourselves, but to honor the Four Freedoms Awards. Queen Máxima wore these outfits during the previous editions of the Four Freedoms Awards.
