King Salman fires Saudi Arabian Haj Minister Mohammed Benten

RIYADH King Salman | bin Abdulaziz al-Saud dari Saudi Arabia fired Mohamed Benten as minister of Hajj and Umrah. The minister’s dismissal was announced in a government decree on Friday (12/3/2021).

The post of minister for Haj and Umrah is a position with a major role in regulating the annual worship of Muslims from around the world. The royal edict was released Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the government media of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Minister of State Issam ben Saeed has been appointed as the Executor (Plt) of the Minister of Hajj and Umrah.

Hajj and Umrah, which generated billions of dollars each year before the COVID-19 pandemic, were the main sources of income for the Saudi government.

“Mohammed Saleh ben Taher Benten, Minister of Haj and Umrah will be released from his position,” wrote SPA in tweether, which is quoted Reuters, without giving the reasons behind the dismissal.

Benten was appointed minister in 2016.

The kingdom, which staked its reputation on guardianship of Islam’s holiest sites in Makkah and Medina and administers the haj, sharply reduced the number of pilgrims last year to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
