King of Kotha was the most pre-release hyped film in Malayalam in recent times. Joshi’s son Abhilash Joshi’s directorial debut was Dulquer Salmaan. The film hit the theaters on August 24 as an Onam release. This was also the first film to hit the Onam releases. Now the film is getting ready for OTT release.
Dulquer’s Malayalam theatrical release coming after Kurup was also a factor that raised the hype for King of Kotha. But the film received mixed reviews on its release day. The crew had raised allegations that the film is being deliberately degraded. Meanwhile media including India Times have reported that the OTT release of the film will take place on September 22. According to a report by India Times, the OTT release will be through leading platform Disney Plus Hotstar. An official announcement regarding this is expected to be made in the next few days.
Despite negative publicity, the film had a good initial collection. Sources related to the film had informed that the film earned more than 14.5 crores in Kerala in the first week. The first week collection in other states was above 7 crores. and another 15 crores from foreign markets. Thus, King of Kotta earned more than 36 crore gross from the global box office in the first week. The big-budget, big-screen film is co-produced by Zee Studios and Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films.
