Military Roots and the Birth of a Passion
Emily Green (EG): Welcome, Major Tommy Vu! Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today.
Tommy vu (TV): Thank you for having me, Emily. It’s a pleasure to be here.
EG: Your passion for burpees stems from their military origins. Can you tell our readers more about that connection?
TV: Absolutely. Burpees were originally invented by Royal H. Burpee in the 1930s to quickly assess the fitness levels of new recruits in the military. As a major in the Oregon Army National Guard, I’ve always admired the discipline and toughness that burpees represent. When I started incorporating them into my workouts, I found they pushed me to my limits, both physically and mentally.
Cracking World Records
EG: That discipline has certainly paid off. You’ve broken multiple world records with your burpee challenges. Can you walk us through some of your most notable achievements?
TV: Well, my journey began in March 2023 when I set the record for the most chest-to-ground burpees in one hour, completing 1,002 repetitions. I later reclaimed that title in October 2024 with an impressive 1,027 burpees. But I’m most proud of my appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ in December 2023, were I managed to perform 26 burpee pull-ups in just one minute. That same month, I completed 611 burpee pull-ups in an hour, raising awareness for veterans and organizations like team RWB.
Inspiring Others and Giving Back
EG: that’s truly commendable. Your dedication to supporting veterans is evident in your record-breaking feats. How else do you hope to inspire others through your burpee challenges?
TV: I want to inspire people from all walks of life – my sons, my fellow military personnel, and fitness enthusiasts worldwide – to challenge themselves and strive for greatness. Burpees are not just an exercise; they’re a symbol of resilience, determination, and the power of setting ambitious goals. I hope that by breaking these records, I can motivate others to push their limits and make a positive impact in their communities, just as I’ve tried to do.
The Future of Burpees
EG: That’s an inspiring message, Tommy. What do you envision for the future of burpees and your own fitness journey?
TV: I believe we’ll see a lot more burpee styles and different burpee world records in the future. I plan on breaking a few more myself, but I also want to encourage others to go out there and challenge my records. After all, there’s always room for growth and advancement in the pursuit of greatness. As for me, I’m excited to continue pushing my limits and inspiring others to do the same.
EG: Major Tommy Vu, thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your incredible story. It’s been an inspiration.
