King makes the move to Lachaert

The King has asked Egbert Lachaert, the chairman of open VLD, to take the necessary initiatives with the aim of forming a government with a broad majority in parliament.

After Paul Magnette and Bart De Wever had offered their resignation as preformers to the king on Monday, he first had a meeting with all parties that are still eligible for a place in the new government. They are N-VA, the Liberal, Socialist and Christian Democratic parties, the Greens and Défi.

The king then accepted the resignation of the preformateurs De Wever (N-VA) and Magnette (PS) and immediately sent Egbert Lachaert into the ring. Lachaert has been asked to ‘take the necessary initiatives with the aim of forming a government with a broad majority in parliament’, according to the Palace.

Lachaert has accepted the commission and is expected for a first report to the king in ten days, on August 28.

The choice is remarkable. On Friday, an attempt by De Wever and Magnette to form a purple-yellow government got stuck on the attitude of the liberals. De Wever and Magnette had an agreement to form a government together with the Christian Democrats, the SP.A and Open VLD. However, Open VLD did not just want to get involved in that story. On the one hand because the party also wants the MR, on the other hand because the party had many questions about the pre-agreement of De Wever and Magnette.
