On Monday, several of Europe’s royals gathered to mourn the death of King Constantine.
The funeral of the Greek ex-king took place in the Metropolis Cathedral in Athens, and both the crown prince couple and Princess Märtha Louise (51) were present from the Norwegian royal family.
The ex-king dead: Lost a close friend
Crown Prince Haakon (49) and Crown Princess Mette-Marit (49) were apparently self-appointed guests. They are very good friends of Konstantin’s eldest son Pavlos (55) and his wife Marie-Chantal (54).
But it is not only the royal family from Norway that Constantine was close to. The Greek royal family also has strong ties to the British royal house.
Paul of Greece, the ex-king’s father, was a cousin of the late Prince Philip, and in the baptism of Prince William (40) in 1982, Constantine stood as godfather.
Therefore, many believed that it would be either King Charles, Queen Camilla or Prince William who would represent the British royal house at the funeral.
Don’t do like Denmark
Yet none of them showed up. Now Buckingham Palace has explained their absence.
Both Charles and Camilla are said to have had a planned meeting with Cyprus’ president Nikos Anastasiades (76) on the same day as the funeral took place. It reports Hello Magazine.
According to the website, Prince William was also busy with private tasks, without specifying exactly what those were.
Princess Anne (72), her husband Timothy Laurence (67) and the daughter of Prince Michael of Kent (80), Lady Gabriella of Windsor (41) went instead. The latter is one of the ex-king’s godchildren, and is said to have been asked to attend on behalf of Prince William.
