DUBAI, KOMPAS.com – King Charles III of England’s tie was in the spotlight when he attended the UN climate summit COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday (1/12/2023).
King Charles was caught wearing a tie with the colors and symbols of the Greek national flag to the forum.
His tie stole attention because a few days ago British Prime Minister (PM) Rishi Sunak mocked Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a dispute over the Parthenon statue.

As reported by Reuters, Charles wore the tie when he met Sunak on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in the United Arab Emirates and when delivering a speech at the event.
Charles himself actually has Greek lineage through his father, the late Prince Philip, who was born on the island of Corfu, Greece.
Sunak deepened the diplomatic row with Athens on Wednesday (29/11/2023) by accusing Mitsotakis of “boasting” on his recent trip to London regarding his ownership of the Parthenon statues.
Sunak canceled a planned meeting with Mitsotakis earlier this week.
A source at Buckingham Palace said on Friday that Charles also wore the same tie last week, before the dispute escalated.
Meanwhile, Sunak’s spokesman refused to comment.
British media noted that, in addition to a blue and white tie featuring the same white cross design as the Greek flag, Charles also wore a blue and white handkerchief that protruded from his jacket pocket.

“In a week when Rishi Sunak canceled a meeting with the Greek Prime Minister to make a ‘stance’ on the #ParthenonMarbles #ElginMarbles… King Charles apparently chose to wear a very interesting tie when meeting Sunak in Dubai today,” said ITV Royal Television Editor , Chris Ship, on social media platform X.
Athens has long asked the British Museum to permanently return the 2,500-year-old statues removed by British diplomat Lord Elgin from the Parthenon temple in 1806.
The museum said it would consider a loan to Greece only if Athens recognized the museum’s ownership of the statues.
