London, United Kingdom (CNN)– Buckingham Palace announced, in a statement, on Monday, that British King Charles III had been diagnosed with a type of cancer.
In a statement Monday, the palace said, “During the King’s recent procedure in hospital to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a separate matter of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a type of cancer.”
He added: “Today, His Majesty the King began a schedule of regular treatments, and during this period doctors have advised him to postpone his public duties.”
He continued: “The King is grateful to his medical team for their rapid intervention, which was made possible thanks to the recent procedure he underwent in hospital. He remains completely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public service as soon as possible.”
A royal source said the infection was not linked to prostate cancer, as some might “incorrectly” assume, following the separate prostate diagnosis.
King Charles was discharged from a hospital in London on January 29, after undergoing treatment for an enlarged prostate. The king spent three nights at the London Clinic – a private hospital near Regent’s Park – and was previously said to be “doing well” after having a prostate operation.
The royal source added that the king returned from Sandringham, England, on Monday morning to begin treatment in outpatient clinics in London. The palace will not share further details about King Charles at this time, according to the royal source.
In a related context, the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement on Monday evening that the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, spoke with his father, King Charles III, about his cancer diagnosis.
The Duke’s office added that Prince Harry will travel to the United Kingdom to see the King in the coming days.
