King Charles has given permission for a boy to be buried in a cemetery where no one has been buried for 168 years.
7-year-old William Brown was killed on December 6 when he was hit by a car in Folkstone, a coastal town about 2 hours’ drive from London. His parents wanted to have him buried next to a church close to his school, but since an order from an advisory body to the British monarch (the privy council) in 1855, no one is allowed to be buried there anymore.
Exception
The parents had requested the advisory body to make an exception, but the body only meets once a month. In addition, the parents reported that they were told the board would not hear the case until February. “That would mean that I would not be able to bury my son until March next year, if the request is approved,” the mother wrote in an emotional letter to King Charles.
The woman traveled to Sandringham House, an estate of the royal family about 2 hours’ drive from Folkstone, on December 25, reports include Kent Online. There she delivered the letter to a security guard of the king. The letter said, in part, “I cannot bear the thought of my child being alone and cold in the morgue for so long. It hurts that he has to spend Christmas Day alone.”
Confirmation
Today the parents were told that the king has decided that William can be buried at the church. “We are pleased that His Majesty the King, on the advice of the Privy Council, has given permission to support the family in these tragic circumstances,” a council spokesperson said.
The boy’s father tells Kent Online that he is relieved. “It was very emotional and we are honored that the King made this decision for our son.” According to him, the boy loved history and would have loved to be part of the king’s decision in this way.
