Buckingham Palace announced that “King Charles has been diagnosed with a type of cancer,” noting in a statement that “the King does not have prostate cancer.”
The statement said, “During the therapeutic intervention, the separate issue appeared, which was diagnosed as a type of cancer.”
The statement stressed that “the disease will immediately receive appropriate treatment, and that doctors advised the king to postpone his public duties.”
He added, “The king decided to reveal his condition to prevent speculation, hoping to help enhance public understanding of all those suffering from cancer in the world.”
The type of cancer was not revealed, but according to a palace statement, the king began “regular treatments” on Monday.
Buckingham Palace says, “The King remains entirely positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public service as soon as possible.”
He will postpone his public commitments, and senior members of the royal family are expected to help stand by him during his treatment.
No other details were shared about the stage of the cancer or its diagnosis.
British media reported that “Prince Harry has communicated with King Charles and will visit him in the coming days.”
Although he will temporarily suspend his public activities, the king (75 years old) will continue his constitutional role as leader of the state.
He was seen at a church service in Sandringham on Sunday, where he waved to crowds.
He had undergone prostate surgery in a private London hospital more than a week ago.
The palace said at the time that “the king chose to publicly disclose prostate treatment, with the aim of encouraging more men to undergo prostate examinations.”
He was said to be happy to raise awareness of the issue, with the NHS website reporting an increase in problems related to prostate disease.
Charles assumed the British throne in September 2022 when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96.
News of the king’s diagnosis comes at a time when his daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, is recovering from abdominal surgery that left her hospitalized for nearly two weeks.
UK politicians sent messages of support.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote in a post on his account on the “X” platform: “I wish His Majesty the King a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt that he will return to full strength in a short time and I know that the entire country wishes him the best of health.”
