‘King celebrates holiday in Greece’ | Inland

Deputy Prime Minister De Jonge said after the Council of Ministers’ he was’ not familiar ‘with the holiday plans of the monarch. The spokesman for the Government Information Service (RVD), who accompanied him at the meeting with the media, also said he did not know whether the king is going on vacation.

The RVD does not want to disclose anything about holidays of the Royal House, because they are considered private. When asked, the service announced later that day that the king and queen adhere to the applicable corona rules and travel advice.

‘Yellow area’

Sources report De Telegraaf that the frost travels to a ‘yellow’ area. The king’s holiday home is located on the Greek mainland, in the ‘yellow’ area. The Greek islands have been declared ‘orange’, which means that the Dutch are advised to visit them only in necessary cases. A trip with the royal speedboat to an island is therefore not an option for the king if he wants to avoid the ten days at home quarantine. According to the cabinet, these are required for a visit to the orange area.

A foreign trip by the king comes at a spicy time, because the cabinet is urging to keep travel movements to a minimum due to the corona crisis. Minister Grapperhaus (Justice) advises people themselves not to cross the border to Belgium for the time being. De Jonge advises people who go on holiday in the Netherlands to stay in and around their accommodation as much as possible.

‘Unwise’

There are also voices in the House of Representatives that holidays abroad are currently unwise, because the second wave is linked to the summer holidays that many Dutch people spent in countries around the Mediterranean. Many people would have come back infected.

The king’s summer vacation in Greece caused a stir a few months ago, when a photo showed that he and Queen Máxima had violated the rules of distance. After a fuss, the couple said ‘in the spontaneity of the moment’ they did not pay close attention to the distance. “Of course we should have. Because compliance with corona rules is also essential on holiday to get the virus under control. ”

“Unwise and incomprehensible”, according to D66 Member of Parliament Joost Sneller the holiday of the monarch. Not a good example for other Dutch people, ”says PvdA member Attje Kuiken. SP Member of Parliament Ronald van Raak calls the holiday ‘extremely unfortunate’: “The king has an exemplary function and should better sense the spirit of today.”
