His Majesty the King will be in New York on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 March as part of the UN 2023 water conference of the United Nations. In New York, the importance of water is central throughout the week.
King Willem-Alexander will give a speech at the opening of the UN water conference on Wednesday 22 March. The Kingdom of the Netherlands is organizing this conference together with the Republic of Tajikistan. It is the first United Nations conference on water in nearly 50 years. The conference should contribute to achieving international agreements in the field of water. Almost every country has a water challenge: too much, too little or poor quality. A so-called Water Action Agenda will therefore be presented at the conference, containing plans and contributions from participating countries, organisations, companies and civil society.
Prior to the opening, King Willem-Alexander and President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan will host a meeting on Tuesday 21 March for all delegation leaders from countries participating in the UN Water Conference.
In addition to the UN Water Conference, the King also participates in several program components of the New York Water Week, organized by the Netherlands and New York City. From 18 to 24 March, the city will serve as a venue to raise awareness, highlight best practices and exchange innovative ideas to ensure clean and safe water in the future.
