Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – Around every 11th daycare center in North Rhine-Westphalia was partially or completely closed in November due to the corona pandemic. As can be seen from a report from the Ministry of Family Affairs to the state parliament, 546 of the 10,500 facilities had to be closed in parts and 408 daycare facilities completely.
According to the ministry, around 730,000 children are cared for by 160,000 employees in the state’s day-care centers. How many children and carers in total were affected by the closings remains open in the report to the state parliament.
Dennis Maelzer, family policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, said on Thursday that the state government’s declared regular operation in daycare centers was a “fraudulent label”. Mälzer added: “The education and support guarantee of the minister is no more than an advertising promise on a coffee trip.” For more security, group segregation is needed in the daycare centers. “For tens of thousands of families, however, that comes too late. When daycare centers are closed, they shouldn’t be charged fees,” says Maelzer.
