The FC Bayern players knew who to thank them for. With 1: 0 (1: 0), the Munich team had won the quarter-finals in the DFB Cup after a hard fight at the surprisingly defensive FC Schalke 04 and thus entered the semi-finals of the competition. Joshua Kimmich (40.) shot the record champion with his long-range shot into the next round.
This hit is exactly what he expects from himself. Kimmich wants to take on as much responsibility as possible at Bayern. He wants to be a leader on which his teammates can stand up. And to whom he can also set the direction in the field. So a 1-0 lead in the vehemently defending Schalke comes just right. The 24-year-old was the door opener in this cup quarter-finals, which dominated Bayern and in which the Ruhr area club could not take advantage of its chances. “I was surprised, the Schalke put themselves in the back for over 90 minutes. I’m happy that I scored 1-0 and an important goal. We can be happy, even if not everything was perfect,” said Kimmich after the final whistle ARD.
Defenses on the defensive
It was no coincidence that it was Kimmich who shot Munich’s luck. Because he is almost always magically drawn to the front. Even in his (initial) time as a right-back at Bayern, he interpreted his game primarily offensive – and sometimes neglected his defensive tasks. But his offensive strengths covered his weaknesses and over the years made him grow more and more into a central role with the Munich team (Kimmich has been with FCB since 2015).
He showed similar symptoms against Schalke: For example, when he was not close enough to Guido Burgstaller before the lead goal in a strategically well-countered counterattack over Weston McKennie – and could only watch from a safe distance as the S04 attacker with one Flight insert the ball against the crossbar of the Munich gate. After all, Kimmich had been called up by coach Hansi Flick in this game as one of three central defenders, who of course should primarily be responsible for Munich security.
First construction player
The shortage of staff is great among the Munich team, which is why Kimmich had to leave his beloved and hard-fought position in the central defensive midfield in Gelsenkirchen that evening. And it quickly became clear that this was not Kimmich’s favorite position: he always ran after Schalke – whenever they were looking for luck in the counter game – often disoriented and misplaced.
However, the team of coach David Wagner did not succeed in using these position errors from Kimmich for a goal. It was the fourth competitive game in a row in which the royal blues had to leave the field without their own goal. However, when Kimmich was involved in direct duels, he usually emerged victorious.
But this inner unrest and impatience, to want to set signals on the offensive again and again, is what makes Kimmich special. If the FCB attack is not so quick, if there is a problem, the Bayern engine stutters and there is no gap in the opposing defense, then it is his job to remedy the situation.
Against the Schalke, Kimmich always wanted to be the first build-up player in the Munich game. The fact that he also plays the corner kicks for FCB as a central defender against Schalke says a lot about the status of the international in the Munich ensemble. Only Kimmich had not kicked this one corner in this game – but he was again not keen to secure the Munich defensive. He waited for the ball in the penalty area and shot low to the goal of the day.
