Kimberley Zimmermann (WTA 47 in doubles) saw her run end in the second round of the ladies’ doubles tournament on the grass of Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, on Saturday. The Brussels and the Russian Yana Sizikova (WTA 43) were beaten by the seeded pair N.13 composed of the Japanese Miyu Kato (WTA 31) and the Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi (WTA 32), 7-5, 6-4, in 1 hour and 28 minutes.
The game started with a break conceded from the start by Sizikova and Zimmermann, but countered in stride. The Belgian-Russian pair dismissed a new break point on their second service game, before yielding in a crucial moment, at 5-5, and their opponents took the opportunity to conclude then.
In the second set, Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were knocked down three times, but they converted their fourth break point to take the lead. They then missed a match point on the service of Zimmermann and Sizikova, before winning on their commitment.
In the next round, Kato and Sutjiadi will meet the Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh (WTA 29) and the Czech Barbora Strycova (WTA 283) or the Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang (WTA 22) and the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (WTA 82).
Earlier in the day, Greetings Minnen (WTA 56) and his Hungarian partner Anna Bondar (WTA 50) obtained their ticket for the round of 16, by eliminating the seeded N.5 composed of the American Desirae Krawczyk (WTA 10) and the Dutch Demi Schuurs (WTA 12).
Elise Mertens et Kirsten Flipkens Both are scheduled to play their Women’s Doubles 2nd round match on Saturday. Jordan Fly et Sander Gille will start in the men’s doubles draw on Saturday as well.
