Kim unexpectedly apologized to South Korea for shooting an official: I’m sorry I let you down

DPRK troops against South Korea allegedly intervened in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.

According to Seoul, the North Korean authorities wrote in a letter addressed to the South Korean state, Mun Che-in, that the incident should not have occurred and that Kim Jong-un deeply regretted it. He is also sorry that he disappointed the South Koreans with this unfortunate event. The North Korean leader then expressed a wish that the affair would not damage mutual trust between the two countries.

The AP reports that it is extremely unusual for a North Korean leader to apologize to his southern neighbor for anything. At the same time, there has been a tense situation on the Korean Peninsula since June this year, when the DPRK exploded the liaison office of both states and threatened Seoul with military intervention.

According to earlier reports from world agencies, the official disappeared on Monday from a South Korean ship that controlled possible illegal fishing in the area of the sea border between the two countries off the South Korean island of Jonpchjong.

The DPRK said North Korean troops fired about 10 rounds at the official as part of a “measure to control the spread of infection” after the man refused to identify and tried to flee. Pyongyang also confirmed Seoul’s previous speculation that soldiers had burned the official’s ship. The North Koreans allegedly did not find the body of the shot.
