Kim Kwan-woo Makes History as Korea’s First E-Sports Gold Medalist

44-year-old Kim Kwan-woo became Korea’s first e-sports gold medalist.

Kim Kwan-woo won the Street Fighter V finals yesterday, defeating Taiwan’s Xiang Yu-lin 4 to 3 in a close match.

Kim Kwan-woo, who enjoyed playing street fighter for over 30 years, quit his job three years ago and became a full-time professional gamer. After being selected as a member of the national team, he trained intensely for up to 10 hours a day by competing online with experts living in the province.

Kim Kwan-woo, who attended the Korea Sports Council’s medalist press conference, showed tears as he said that his mother, who scolded him for going to the arcade when he was young, sent him a text message saying, “I’m so happy I won a gold medal.”
