The North Korean leader Kim Jong UnKim Jong Un (Hangul 김정은, Hanja 金正恩, English Kim Jong-Un) is a North Korean politician, visited the new city, which is being built near the country’s border with China and the mountain, considered sacred by his family, Reuters reported, citing a statement from the North Korean agency KCTA.
It was Kim’s first appearance in 35 days when he delivered a speech at a defense show.
The city of Samjion, which he visited, will become a major economic hub, called a “socialist utopia” by North Koreans. There will be modern apartments, hotels, a ski resort and commercial, cultural and health sites. The city is also located near the sacred mountain Pektu, often visited by Kim.
In the town of Samjiyon, Kim inspected the progress of the third and final phase of construction, which should be completed this year after delays caused by international sanctions and the pandemic.
