Jakarta –
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un fired the military’s top general. Kim Jong Un also called for more preparations for war.
Reported by Reuters, Thursday (10/8/2023), Kim Jong Un made this call while attending a Central Military Commission meeting discussing countermeasures to deter North Korea’s enemies, whose name was not further disclosed. Kim Jong Un also ordered an increase in weapons production and an expansion of military exercises.
Meanwhile, a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) news agency said Chief of Staff General Pak Su Il, who was North Korea’s top general, had been “dismissed”. The reasons for the general’s removal were not further stated. It is known that Mr. Su Il held the post for the last seven months.
KNCA said Pak Su Il was replaced by General Ri Yong Gil. Yong Gil previously served as Minister of Defense and supreme commander of North Korea’s conventional forces.
Ri Yong Gil has also served as Chief of Staff of the North Korean Army. When he was removed from office in 2016, his removal and absence from official state events sparked speculation in South Korea that he had been executed.
However, Ri Yong Gil reappears a few months later, when he is appointed to another senior position.
KNCA added that at the meeting, Kim Jong Un also set targets for expanding weapons production capacity, but details were not disclosed.
