Kim Hye-young (63), daughter-in-law of the late Chung Ju-young, honorary chairman of Hyundai Group, will compete in the bridge event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games wearing the Taegeuk symbol. Kim Hye-young is the wife of Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance Chairman Chung Mong-yoon, the seventh son of Chairman Chung Ju-young.
According to the Korea Bridge Association on the 22nd, Mr. Kim, who serves as the association’s vice president, will directly participate in this competition as a player. The first preliminary round of mixed bridge will be held on the 27th.
Bridge is a two-person card game. A total of 4 people compete in 2 groups. In the case of Go-Stop or Poker, the luck of receiving a good hand largely determines winning or losing, but in Bridge, most elements of luck are excluded.
Although it has not been widely spread in Korea due to the negative perception that equates card games with gambling, bridge is played by about 40 million people in over 130 countries around the world. Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, and Warren Buffett, known as an investment genius, are famous bridge game enthusiasts.
It is known that Mr. Kim started learning bridge about 10 years ago. Since becoming vice president of the association, Mr. Kim has been holding a bridge competition every year to raise money for charity and donating the proceeds to the Fruit of Love.
After starting bridge, Kim achieved excellent results, including 1st place in the 3rd Round Robin Team Tournament, 9th place in the 4th European Winter Games (GCK Trophy), and 2nd place in the 17th Spring Team Tournament.
An official from the Bridge Association said in a phone call with Chosun.com, “Hyeyoung Kim was selected as a national representative through an internal selection process,” and “her background as vice president of the association was not reflected at all in the selection of the national representative.”
Bridge was selected as a demonstration sport at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games. Afterwards, it was adopted as an official event starting from the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia.
